The Shabbat Evening Kiddush

Kiddish should preferably be made on wine, but if it is not available one may make Kiddush on bread. This occurrence is not to be confused with the blessing over the bread before the meal which follows the Kiddush on wine.

מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד, יְיָ רֹעִי לֹא אֶחְסָר: בִּנְאוֹת דֶּשֶׁא יַרְבִּיצֵנִי, עַל מֵי מְנֻחוֹת יְנַהֲלֵנִי: נַפְשִׁי יְשׁוֹבֵב, יַנְחֵנִי בְמַעְגְּלֵי צֶדֶק לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ: גַּם כִּי אֵלֵךְ בְּגֵיא צַלְמָוֶת לֹא אִירָא רָע כִּי אַתָּה עִמָּדִי, שִׁבְטְךָ וּמִשְׁעַנְתֶּךָ הֵמָּה יְנַחֲמֻנִי: תַּעֲרֹךְ לְפָנַי שֻׁלְחָן נֶגֶד צֹרְרָי, דִּשַּׁנְתָּ בַשֶּׁמֶן רֹאשִׁי, כּוֹסִי רְוָיָה: אַךְ טוֹב וָחֶסֶד יִרְדְּפוּנִי כָּל יְמֵי חַיָּי, וְשַׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְיָ לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִים:

A Psalm by David. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul; He directs me in paths of righteousness for the sake of His Name. Even if I will walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staffthey will comfort me. You will prepare a table for me before my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup is full. Only goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the House of the Lord for many long years. 2

דָּא הִיא סְעוּדָתָא דַּחֲקַל תַּפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין:

This is the meal of the holy Chakal Tapuchin. 3

אַתְקִינוּ סְעוּדָתָא דִמְהֵימְנוּתָא שְׁלֵמָתָא חֶדְוָתָא דְּמַלְכָּא קַדִּישָׁא: אַתְקִינוּ סְעוּדָתָא דְמַלְכָּא, דָּא הִיא סְעוּדָתָא דַּחֲקַל תַּפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין, וּזְעֵר אַנְפִּין וְעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא אַתְיָן לְסַעֲדָא בַּהֲדָהּ:

Prepare the meal of perfect faith, which is the delight of the holy King; prepare the meal of the King. This is the meal of the holy Chakal Tapuchin, 3 and Zeir Anpin 3 and the holy Ancient One 3 come to join her in the meal. 4

One should take the Kiddush cup with their right hand and pass it to the left hand; they should then with their left hand lower the cup into the flat and open palm of their right hand; one should then close their fingers faced upwards to hug the base of the cup. The cup should be held approximately 9 inches above the table while the entire Kiddush is recited. Those listening should respond “אָמֵן" to the blessings. One should gaze briefly upon the Shabbat candles then say:

יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי: וַיְכֻלּוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ וְכָל צְבָאָם: וַיְכַל אֱלֹהִים בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי, מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה, וַיִּשְׁבֹּת בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי מִכָּל מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה: וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי, וַיְקַדֵּשׁ אֹתוֹ, כִּי בוֹ שָׁבַת מִכָּל מְלַאכְתּוֹ, אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים לַעֲשׂוֹת:

The sixth day. And the heavens and the earth and all their hosts were completed. And God finished by the Seventh Day His work which He had done, and He rested on the Seventh Day from all His work which He had done. And God blessed the Seventh Day and made it holy, for on it He rested from all His work which God created to function. 2

סַבְרִי מָרָנָן:

verse, who creates the fruit of the vine. (Amen)

If not saying Kiddush on wine or grape juice, one may say over bread:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֶלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ: (אָמֵן)

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. (Amen)

On wine or grape juice:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְרִי הַגָּפֶן (אָמֵן)

who creates the fruit of the vine.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְווֹתָיו וְרָצָה בָּנוּ, וְשַׁבַּת קָדְשׁוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה וּבְרָצוֹן הִנְחִילָנוּ, זִכָּרוֹן לְמַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית, תְּחִלָּה לְמִקְרָאֵי קֹדֶשׁ, זֵכֶר לִיצִיאַת מִצְרָיִם. כִּי בָנוּ בָחַרְתָּ וְאוֹתָנוּ קִדַּשְׁתָּ מִכָּל הָעַמִּים. וְשַׁבַּת קָדְשְׁךָ בְּאַהֲבָה וּבְרָצוֹן הִנְחַלְתָּנוּ. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ מְקַדֵּשׁ הַשַּׁבָּת: (אָמֵן)

verse, who has hallowed us with His commandments, has desired us, and has given us, in love and goodwill, His holy Shabbat as a heritage, in remembrance of the work of Creation; the first of the holy festivals, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. For You have chosen us and sanctified us from among all the nations, and with love and goodwill given us Your holy Shabbat as a heritage. Blessed are You Lord, who hallows the Shabbat. (Amen)

When Shabbat coincides with Chol HaMoed Sukkot, immediately after saying Kiddush in the Sukkah, one should add the following blessing. When saying the words “לֵישֵׁב בַּסֻּכָּה” one should briefly gaze upon the covering of the Sukkah:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לֵישֵׁב בַּסֻּכָּה:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to dwell in the sukkah. (Amen)

The wine should be distributed to each person listening, the person who recited the Kiddush should be seated and drink at least 2 ounces of the remaining wine. All people present should wash their hands in the ritual manner; after washing one should abstain from any unnecessary talking until after the eating of the bread. The head of the family should say a blessing over two whole loaves of bead, slice it, dip in in salt and distribute a piece to each person; each individual should recite the blessing over the bread themselves before eating. It is customary to sing the following table hymn following the fish course of the meal:

צְוָחִין אַף עַקְתִין, בְּטֵלִין וּשְׁבִיתִין, בְּרַם אַנְפִּין חַדְתִּין, וְרוּחִין עִם נַפְשִׁין:

Cries of woe and afflictions are ended and have ceased; now there are new faces, and spirits together with souls.

חֲדוּ סַגֵּי יֵיתֵי, וְעַל חֲדָא תַּרְתֵּי, נְהוֹרָא לָהּ יִמְטֵי, וּבִרְכָאָן דִּנְפִישִׁין:

Great joy comes, and it is doubled; light streams forth upon Her, and blessings in overflowing measure.

קְרִיבוּ שׁוּשְׁבִינִין, עֲבִידוּ תִּקּוּנִין, לְאַפָּשָׁא זִינִין, וְנוּנִין עִם רַחֲשִׁין:

Draw near, O groomsmen, and prepare delicacies of many kinds, all manner of fish and fowl.

לְמֶעֱבַד נִשְׁמָתִין, וְרוּחִין חַדְתִּין, בְּתַרְתֵּין וּבִתְלָתִין, וּבִתְלָתָא שִׁבְשִׁין:

To make new souls and new spirits, with the thirty-two [paths of Wisdom] and with the three branches.

שְׁכִינְתָּא תִּתְעַטָּר, בְּשִׁית נַהֲמֵי לִסְטָר, בְּוָוִין תִּתְקַטָּר, וְזִינִין דִּכְנִישִׁין:

May the Shechinah be crowned with six loaves on each side, bound up with the supernal sphere and with all that gives vitality.

שְׁבִיתִין וּשְׁבִיקִין, מְסָאֳבִין דִּרְחִיקִין, חֲבִילִין דִּמְעִיקִין, וְכָל זִינֵי חֲבוּשִׁין:

Removed and sent away are the impure forces, the menacing powers that confine; and every harsh decree and oppressive force has departed.

לְמִבְצַע עַל רִפְתָּא, כְּזֵיתָא וּכְבֵיעָתָא, תְּרֵין יוּדִין נַקְטָא, סְתִימִין וּפְרִישִׁין:

מְשַׁח זֵיתָא דַכְיָא, דְטַחֲנִין רֵיחַיָּא, וְנַגְדִּין נַחֲלַיָּא, בְּגַוָּהּ בִּלְחִישִׁין:

הֲלָא נֵימָא רָזִין, וּמִלִין דִּגְנִיזִין, דְּלֵיתֵהוֹן מִתְחַזִין, טְמִירִין וּכְבִישִׁין:

אִתְעַטָרַא כַּלָּה, בְּרָזִין דִּלְעֵלָא, בְּגוֹ הַאי הִלּוּלָא, דְּעִירִין קַדִּישִׁין:

אֲזַמֵּר בִּשְׁבָחִין, לְמֵיעַל גּוֹ פִתְחִין, דְּבַחֲקַל תַּפּוּחִין, דְּאִנּוּן קַדִּישִׁין:

I will sing in praises to enter the gates of the Field of holy Apples.

נְזַמִּין לָהּ הַשְׁתָּא, בִּפְתורָא חַדְתָּא, וּבִמְנַרְתָּא טַבְתָּא, דְּנָהֳרָא עַל רֵישִׁין:

We now invite Her [the Shechinah] anew, with a finely set table and a goodly lamp that sheds light upon our heads.

יְמִינָא וּשמָאלָא, וּבֵנַיְהוּ כַלָּה, בְּקִשּׁוּטִין אָזְלָא, וּמָאנִין וּלְבוּשִׁין:

On the right and on the left, and the Bride in between, She comes forth in her adornments, with vessels and robes.

יְחַבֵּק לָהּ בַּעְלָהּ, וּבִיסוֹדָא דִילָהּ, דְּעָבֵיד נַיְחָא לָהּ יְהֵא כַּתִּישׁ כַּתִּישִׁין:

Her Husband embraces Her, and with Her foundation that gives Her pleasure, He presses [the husks] until they are crushed.

יְהֵא רַעֲוָא קַמֵּיהּ, דְּתִשְׁרֵיהּ עַל עַמֵיהּ, דְּיִתְעַנַּג לִשְׁמֵהּ, בִּמְתִיקִין וְדוּבְשִׁין:

May it be His will that He cause His Presence to rest upon His people, who take delight, for His Name's sake, in sweet dainties and honey.

אֲסַדֵּר לִדְרוֹמָא, מְנַרְתָּא דִסְתִימָא. וְשֻׁלְחָן עִם נַהֲמָא, בִּצְפוֹנָא אַרְשִׁין:

I will set in the south the mystical Menorah; I will make room in the north for the table with the loaves of bread.

בְּחַמְרָא גּוֹ כַסָּא, וּמְדָאנֵי אַסָּא, לְאָרוּס וַאֲרוּסָה, לְהַתְּקָפָה חַלָּשִׁין:

With wine in the cup, and myrtle clusters, for the Bridegroom and the Bride, to give strength to the faint.

נַעֲבֵיד לְהוֹן כִּתְרִין, בְּמִלִּין יַקִּירִין, בְּשַׁבְעִין עִטּוּרִין דְּעַל גַּבֵּי חַמְשִׁין:

We will make for them crowns of precious words, seventy crowns that are above the fifty.

וְעִטּוּרִין שַׁבְעִין לָהּ, וּמַלְכָּא דִּלְעֵלָּא, דְּיִתְעַטַּר כְֹּלָא, בְּקַדִּישׁ קַדִּישִׁין:

And She has seventy crowns, and the supernal King, that all may be crowned in the Holy of Holies.

רְשִׁימִין וּסְתִימִין, בְּגוֹ כָּל עָלְמִין, בְּרַם עֲתִּיק יוֹמִין, הֲלָא בַּטִּישׁ בַּטִּישִׁין:

Engraved and hidden within all worlds; but the Ancient of Days is most concealed and elevated of all.

וִיהֵא רַעֲוָא מִן קֳדָם עַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא דְכָל קַדִּישִׁין, טְמִירָא דְכָל טְמִירִין סְתִימָא דְכֹלָּא דְּיִתְמַשֵּׁךְ טַלָּא עִלָּאָה מִנֵּהּ לְמַלְיָא רֵישָׁהּ דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין וּלְהָטִיל בַּחֲקַל תַּפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין בִּנְהִירוּ דְאַנְפִּין בִּרְעֲוָא וּבְחֶדְוְתָא דְכֹלָּא.

May it be the will of the most holy Ancient One, the most concealed of all, the most hidden of all, that there be drawn down the supernal dew from the Holy Ancient One, to mollify the Field of holy Apples; and may His Countenance shine in glory and in gladness through the whole and through the part. May the favor and good will of the Holy Ancient One rest upon us, and may He bestow upon us long life and sustenance and help, that we may be remembered with good remembrance and favor before Him, for life and for peace, here and in all the worlds, Amen.
