On Shemini Atzeret the Chazzan's repetition of the Musaf Amidah is extended, incorporating the Prayers for Rain into the middle of the first couple blessings of the Musaf Amidah. In the context of the service, these first blessings are amended as follows: The Ark is opened at this time.

אֲדֹנָי, שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח,

My Lord, open my lips,

וּפִי יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶךָ:

and my mouth shall declare Your praise.

אבות – Patriarchs Bend at בָּרוּךְ, bow at אַתָּה, and straighten up at יְיָ:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ, אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם, אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָק, וֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב, הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא אֵל עֶלְיוֹן, גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים, קוֹנֵה הַכֹּל, וְזוֹכֵר חַסְדֵּי אָבוֹת, וּמֵבִיא גוֹאֵל לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה: מֶלֶךְ, עוֹזֵר וּמוֹשִׁיעַ וּמָגֵן:

Blessed are You, Lord our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob, the great, mighty and awesome God, exalted God, who bestows bountiful kindness, who creates all things, who remembers the piety of the Patriarchs, and who, in love, brings a redeemer to their children’s children, for the sake of His Name. O King, [You are] a helper, a savior and a shield.

אַף בְּרִי אֻתַּת שֵׁם שָֹר מָטָר, לְהַעֲבִיב וּלְהַעֲנִין לְהָרִיק וּלְהַמְטַר, מַיִם אִבִּים בָּם גֵּיא לַעֲטַר, לְבַל יוּעֲצָרוּ בְּנִשְׁיוֹן שְׁטַר, אֱמוּנִים גְּנוֹן בָּם שׁוֹאֲלֵי מָטָר:

Af-Bri is designated as the name of the angel of rain, 2 who overcasts [the sky], covering it with clouds, emptying them and causing rain to fall. Water with which to crown the earth with herbage; let it not be held back for our neglected debts (sins). In the merit of the faithful [Patriarchs], protect [Israel] who prays for rain.

Bend at בָּרוּךְ, bow at אַתָּה, and straighten up at יְיָ:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, מָגֵן אַבְרָהָם:

Blessed are You, Lord, Shield of Abraham.

גבורות – God's Might

אַתָּֽה גִּבּֽוֹר לְעוֹלָֽם אֲדֹנָֽי,

You are mighty forever, my Lord;

מְחַיֶּֽה מֵתִֽים אַתָּֽה,

You resurrect the dead;

רַב לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ:

You are powerful to save.

יַטְרִיחַ לְפַלֵּג מִפֶּלֶג גֶּשֶׁם, לְמוֹגֵג פְּנֵי נֶשִׁי בְּצָחוֹת לֶשֶׁם, מַיִם לְאַדְּרָךְ כִּנִּיתָ בְּרֶשֶׁם, לְהַרְגִיעַ בְּרָעֲפָם לִנְפוּחֵי נֶשֶׁם. לְהַחֲיוֹת מַזְכִּירִים גְּבוּרוֹת הַגָּשֶׁם:

May He impose [upon the angel] to apportion rain from the [heavenly] waters, to soften the face of the earth with its crystal-clear drops. In the Torah You have called water “mighty”, as You are called [mighty]; to soothe with its drops those in whose nostrils was blown the breath of life, and to give life to those who bring to mind the powers of rain.

The custom is for this following stanzas to be said responsively. The Chazzan recited the first stanza, followed by the congregation; the subsequent stanzas are said first by the congregation and then repeated by the Chazzan. The refrains of “בַּעֲבוּרו” and “בְּצִדְקו” are said by the congregation in unison with the Chazzan.

אֱלֹהֵינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ:

Our God and God of our fathers:

זְכוֹר אָב נִמְשַׁךְ אַחֲרֶיךָ כַּמַּיִם, בֵּרַכְתּוֹ כְּעֵץ שָׁתוּל עַל פַּלְגֵי מַיִם, גְּנַנְתּוֹ הִצַּלְתּוֹ מֵאֵשׁ וּמִמַּיִם, דְּרַשְׁתּוֹ בְּזָרְעוֹ עַל כָּל מָיִם:

Remember [Abraham our] forefather who followed You like water; You blessed him like a tree planted beside streams of water; You protected him, You rescued him from fire and from water; You tested him when he planted by every water—

בַּעֲבוּרוֹ אַל תִּמְנַע מָיִם:

For his sake, do not hold back water!

זְכוֹר הַנּוֹלָד בִּבְשֹוֹרַת יֻקַּח נָא מְעַט מַיִם, וְשחְתָּ לְהוֹרוֹ לְשָׁחֲטוֹ לִשְׁפֹּךְ דָּמוֹ כַּמַּיִם, זִהֵר גַּם הוּא לִשְׁפָּךְ לֵב כַּמַּיִם, חָפַר וּמָצָא בְּאֵרוֹת מָיִם:

Remember [Isaac] who was born after the good tidings at which it was said, “Let there be fetched a bit of water”; You told his father to sacrifice him, to spill his blood like water; he was careful in pouring out his heart [in prayer] like water; he dug and found wells of water—

בְּצִדְקוֹ חֹן חַשְׁרַת מָיִם:

For the sake of his righteousness, favor us with an abundance of water!

זְכוֹר טָעַן מַקְלוֹ וְעָבַר יַרְדֵּן מַיִם, יִחַד לֵב וְגָל אֶבֶן מִפִּי בְאֵר מַיִם, כְּנֶאֱבַק לוֹ שַֹר בָּלוּל מֵאֵשׁ וּמִמַּיִם, לָכֵן הִבְטַחְתּוֹ הֱיוֹת עִמּוֹ בָּאֵשׁ וּבַמָּיִם:

Remember [Jacob] who carried his staff and crossed the Jordan’s water; he united his heart [with God] and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well of water; as when he wrestled with an angel composed of fire and water; therefore You promised to be with him in fire and in water—

בַּעֲבוּרוֹ אַל תִּמְנַע מָיִם:

For his sake, do not hold back water!

זְכוֹר מָשׁוּי בְּתֵיבַת גֹּמֶא מִן הַמַּיִם, נָמוּ דָּלֹה דָלָה וְהִשְׁקָה צֹאן מַיִם, סְגוּלֶיךָ עֵת צָמְאוּ לְמַּיִם, עַל הַסֶּלַע הָךְ וַיֵּצְאוּ מָיִם:

Remember [Moses] who was drawn out in a wicker box from the water; they said, “He drew water [for us] and gave the sheep water to drink”; when Your cherished people thirsted for water, he struck the rock and there streamed forth water—

בְּצִדְקוֹ חֹן חַשְׁרַת מָיִם:

For the sake of his righteousness, favor us with an abundance of water!

זְכוֹר פְּקִיד שָׁתוֹת טוֹבֵל חָמֵשׁ טְבִילוֹת בַּמַּיִם, צֹעֶה וּמַרְחִיץ כַּפָּיו בְּקִדּוּשׁ מַיִם, קוֹרֵא וּמַזֶּה טָהֳרַת מַיִם, רוּחַק מֵעַם פַּחַז כַּמָּיִם:

Remember [Aaron, the High Priest] in charge of the Bet Hamikdash, who [on Yom Kippur] immersed himself five times in water; he cleansed and washed his hands with sacred water; he called out [the order of sprinkling of the blood] and sprinkled, [and the people were] purified as with water; he removed himself from a people swift as water—

בַּעֲבוּרוֹ אַל תִּמְנַע מָיִם:

For his sake, do not hold back water!

זְכוֹר שְׁנֵים עָשָֹר שְׁבָטִים שֶׁהֶעֱבַרְתָּ בְּגִזְרַת מַיִם, שֶׁהִמְתַּקְתָּ לָּמוֹ מְרִירוּת מַיִם, תּוֹלְדוֹתָם נִשְׁפַּךְ דָּמָם עָלֶיךָ כַּמַּיִם, תֵּפֶן כִּי נַפְשֵׁנוּ אָפְפוּ מָיִם:

Remember the twelve tribes whom You brought across the split waters; for whom You have sweetened the bitterness of the water; the blood of their progeny was spilled for Your sake like water; turn to us, for our soul is engulfed [with tribulations] as with water—

בַּעֲבוּרוֹ אַל תִּמְנַע מָיִם:

For the sake of their righteousness, favor us with an abundance of water!

Chazzan:

שָׁאַתָּה הוּא יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מַשִּׁיב הָרוּחַ וּמוֹרִיד הַגָשֶׁם:

For You are the Lord our God, who causes the wind to blow and the rain to fall.

The following verses are said responsively, first by congregation then repeated by the Chazzan; the congregation responds אָמֵן were indicated upon hearings the Chazzan's repetition:

לִבְרָכָה וְלֹא לִקְלָלָה: אָמֵן

For a blessing and not for a curse. (Amen)

לְחַיִּים וְלֹא לַמָּוֶת: אָמֵן

For life and not for death. (Amen)

לְשׂבַע וְלֹא לְרָזוֹן: אָמֵן

For plenty and not for scarcity. (Amen)
