Open in the free interactive Siddur →The oleh called to the Sefer Torah should touch he beginning and end of the portion being read with the corner of their Tallit or the belt of the Sefer Torah and then kiss it. The Sefer Torah should be closed and held by both handles, then ones head turned slightly to the left as they say:
בָּרְכוּ אֶת יְיָ הַמְברָךְ:
The congregation responds:
בָּרוּךְ יְיָ הַמְברָךְ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד:
The oleh then says:
בָּרוּךְ יְיָ הַמְברָךְ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe,
אֲשֶׁר בָּחַר בָּנוּ מִכָּל הָעַמִּים וְנָתַן לָנוּ אֶת תּוֹרָתוֹ.
who has chosen us from among all the nations and given us His Torah.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ. נוֹתֵן הַתּוֹרָה:
Blessed are You, Lord, who gives the Torah.
As the Torah portion is being read, one should hold on to the left handle of the Sefer Torah and quietly read along with the reader. Upon completion of the portion by the reader one should touch the portion being read again with the corner of their Tallit or the belt of the Sefer Torah, again close the the Sefer Torah and hold both handles, holding the head slightly to right and say the concluding blessing as follows:
בָּרֽוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֺהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe,
אֲשֶׁר נָֽתַן לָֽנוּ תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת, וְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם נָטַע בְּתוֹכֵֽנוּ:
who has given us the Torah of truth and implanted within us eternal life.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, נוֹתֵן הַתּוֹרָה:
Blessed are You, Lord, who gives the Torah.
